Why sampling is worth doing first
Many packaging problems cannot be judged from a file or a screen. The actual hand of a specialty paper, how foil reflects under real light, the damping as a magnetic lid closes, whether the product rattles once seated in its insert — none of these can be confirmed without a physical sample.
Fixing something at the sampling stage costs far less than fixing it after production. Structural dimensions, assembly sequence and process parameters are effectively locked once the dieline is approved, and changes get more expensive from there.
What a sample kit contains
A sample kit ships everything needed to make the decision at once, rather than a single finished box:
- Paper samples: several specialty papers and grammages at the same positioning, so hand and stiffness can be compared directly.
- Finish samples: foil stamping, embossing, texture and spot UV shown on the real paper stock.
- Structure sample: the actual structure built to the brief, so lid feel, assembly sequence and protection can be validated.
- Reference: an existing pack can be sent in for side-by-side comparison.
Lead time and quantities
Current site guidance supports gift-box sampling from 100 sets. Typical sample lead time is around 3–7 days depending on the complexity of structure, materials and finishing; some sample kits ship in about 3 days after requirements are confirmed.
Small-run gift-box projects are commonly in the 500–3,000 set range. Final quantities, materials and production requirements are confirmed per project.
For supplier evaluation
Sampling is the lowest-cost way to assess a packaging supplier before committing. Compared with comparing quotations, a physical sample reveals more: whether the structural logic holds up, whether finishing is executed consistently, how communication runs, and whether the supplier raises problems in the design on their own initiative at the sampling stage.
No production volume has to be committed at this stage; the sample kit is shipped to the actual structure once requirements are confirmed.
What to send with a sampling request
The more complete the brief, the closer the sample lands to the real requirement. Useful inputs: product dimensions and weight, packaging purpose, expected production quantity, transport mode, target market, paper and finishing preferences, stacking or protection requirements, and when the samples are needed.
